Yesterday morning my 4 year old woke up vomiting. I am not sure if he caught a bug while camping this past weekend? Too much fresh air? He was sick about 5 times and I was beginning to get concerned about dehydration. Each time he took anything in (water, juice, toast and the motrin/tylenol) it came right back out. So off to the doctor we went. Lucas fell asleep on the examination table while daddy laid down next to him. The doctor comes in the the room and takes a 30 second look at him. He says I wouldn’t want to lay that close to him and leaves the room. My husband and I look at each other wondering if he is gonna come back into the room in a Hazmat suit? At that point I start freakin’ out! I notice how white his tongue is and that his eyes are just so sunken in. He was lethargic all day and I am really nervous at this point.
I swear I wish I would have known ahead of time the panic I would be experiencing as a mom! Every little fever and I immediately jump to the worse case scenario. I wonder if it is because I always want to prepare for the worst so I can experience the most relief?
Anyway, the nurse comes in and gets his temp and weight. The doctor needed these vital pieces of information to make his case. I had not even noticed that they had forgotten to do that. He had a low grade fever and we were told that if he woke up today sick or if started to come out the other end that we would have to take him to the hospital for fluids.
Happily he is back to himself today, but I spend the past 24 hours holding a bucket next to him and a cold pack on his head. I am seriously considering making a t shirt or something that lets everyone know ahead of time that I suffer panic disorder and not to keep me waiting in a small little room. Ugh!
